How to Clean Your Content After a Home Fire

12/11/2017 (Permalink)

A home fire can be devastating. The most important aspect is that you made it out of your home safely and are now able to return to it. You might ask yourself if some of your belongings can be saved. Fire restoration companies, experts in content cleaning, know that most smoke-damaged belongings can be cleaned. One of the things they recommend is dry cleaning. Here are some tips on how to clean your belongings.

Get Rid of the Water

The first thing you will have to do is get rid of the water and moisture. Not doing so will cause further damage and give mold a chance to grow. The way to do this is with a powerful water pump and press extractor. Dry wet carpets and furniture and hang clothes, draperies and pillows outside to dry. For non-damaged items, content storage is recommended so nothing can cause harm to them.

Dry Clean Clothes

For clothes, most restoration professionals recommend dry cleaning. Don’t attempt to clean clothes, draperies and any other textile items yourself as this can cause permanent damage to them. A restoration expert can remove the soot from your damaged items.

Remove the smoke smell.

After you get rid of the soot, you will want to get rid of the smoke smell in textiles and throughout the home. Thoroughly vent your house and get box fans and dehumidifiers to help expedite the process. The experts use specialized procedures such as ozone treatment and thermal fogging to effectively remove the smell.

Clean Non-porous Items

Non-porous items are generally easier to clean than porous items. Ultrasonic treatment and high-pressure water are some of the procedures restoration companies are utilizing. Their equipment can successfully remove contamination from your belongings and restore them to pre-fire condition.

These are a few of the helpful ways you can follow to clean your content after a home fire. Local restoration professionals have the proper expertise, tools and equipment to get the job done right and can help with dry cleaning, content cleaning and content storage.

Water Damage Water Damage? Leave it to the Professionals Suffering with water damage? Leave it to the professionals at SERVPRO of Prosper/Little Elm.

Most people don't actively plan on water damage in their homes or businesses, so deciding the proper way to restore a flood damaged property is important.

With so many aspects of life becoming increasingly more expensive by the day, it is no wonder that so many Americans choose to go the Do-It-Yourself route on an ever expanding wide array of tasks. While changing one's own oil or even doing one's own drywall job is commendable, there are still some jobs that are best left to the professionals. Water damage restoration and mitigation is one of them.

Each year, billions of dollars in property damage occur all over the United States due to flood damage. While some of these properties will inevitably be written off, the vast majority are completely salvageable. This means that, even though massive property damage was ultimately incurred, there absolutely never should have been any to begin with. All too often, this is the simple result of the property owner not recognizing the severity of the situation and taking the proper steps to remedy it.

One of those important steps is to mitigate damage after a flood.

Severe weather can happen any time, anywhere.

Each year, Americans cope with an average of the following intense storms:

  • 10,000 severe thunderstorms

  • 5,000 floods or flash floods

  • 1,000 tornadoes

  • 2 landfalling deadly hurricanes

Approximately 98% of all nationally declared disasters are weather-related, leading to around 500 deaths per year and nearly $15 billion in damage. * Knowing your risk of severe weather, taking action and being an example are just a few steps you can take to be better prepared to save your life and assist in saving the lives of others.

    Know Your Risk.

The first step to becoming weather-ready is to understand the type
of hazardous weather that can affect where you live and work, and how the weather could impact you, your business and your family. Check the weather forecast regularly, obtain a NOAA Weather Radio, and learn about Wireless Emergency Alerts. Severe weather comes in many forms and your shelter plan should include all types of local hazards.

    Take Action.

Take the next step in severe weather preparedness by creating a communications plan for your home and business. Put together
or purchase an emergency kit. Keep important papers and valuables in a safe place.

    Be an Example.

Once you have taken action to prepare for severe weather, share your story with co-workers and family and friends on Facebook or Twitter. Your preparedness story will inspire others to do the same.

    Build An Emergency Supply Kit

Grill Safely Tips from SERVPRO of Prosper/Little Elm

6/20/2017 (Permalink)

June and July are peak months for summer grilling fires. So when you pull out your backyard grill to wipe the built up dust off of it to once again brush up on your grilling skills in hopes that you will finally perfect that perfect secret recipe.  As exciting as it is to break out the grill for the official start of the summer season right, we have to always consider the safety that needs to be taken into account when preparing cook outdoors.

According to the National Fire Protection Agency(NFPA), fire departments in the United States responded to an average of 8,900 home fires that involved the use of grills, hibachis, or barbecues per year. These 8,900 fires caused an annual average of $120 million dollars in property damage, 160 injuries and 10 civilian deaths.  Almost all the losses resulted from structure fires. The leading cause of grill fires came from the inability to properly clean a grill before using it, as well as not keeping it a safe distance from outside structures or the home itself and leaving the grill unattended. 83%, which breaks down to about every 5 out of 6 grills involved in home fires were fueled by gas, while 13% used other sources of fuel.

Precautions to take while grilling

• Stay alert when grilling. Avoid grilling when you are tired or have consumed too much alcohol.

• Do Not leave your grill unattended.

• Keep the grill in a place that is free from flammable items and away from porch rails, and low lying branches.

• Keep children and pets as far away from the grill as possible

• Check the gas tank hose for leaks before using it for the first time each year.

NOTE: A light soap and water solution applied to the hose is a great way to check for leaks. You can often smell a propane leak, but propane will also release bubbles when the soap and water solution is applied. If you detect a leak, turn the gas tank and grill off. If the leak stops, get the grill serviced by a professional before using it again. If the leak does not stop, call the fire department.

• Always make sure your gas grill lid is open before igniting.

• If you smell gas while cooking, immediately move away from the grill and call the fire department. Do not move the grill.

• If the flames go out for any reason, turn the grill and gas off and wait at least 15 minutes before re-lighting it.

• Keep your grill clean by regularly removing grease or fat buildup from the grates and trays below.
