Grill Safely Tips from SERVPRO of Prosper/Little Elm

6/20/2017 (Permalink)

June and July are peak months for summer grilling fires. So when you pull out your backyard grill to wipe the built up dust off of it to once again brush up on your grilling skills in hopes that you will finally perfect that perfect secret recipe.  As exciting as it is to break out the grill for the official start of the summer season right, we have to always consider the safety that needs to be taken into account when preparing cook outdoors.

According to the National Fire Protection Agency(NFPA), fire departments in the United States responded to an average of 8,900 home fires that involved the use of grills, hibachis, or barbecues per year. These 8,900 fires caused an annual average of $120 million dollars in property damage, 160 injuries and 10 civilian deaths.  Almost all the losses resulted from structure fires. The leading cause of grill fires came from the inability to properly clean a grill before using it, as well as not keeping it a safe distance from outside structures or the home itself and leaving the grill unattended. 83%, which breaks down to about every 5 out of 6 grills involved in home fires were fueled by gas, while 13% used other sources of fuel.

Precautions to take while grilling

• Stay alert when grilling. Avoid grilling when you are tired or have consumed too much alcohol.

• Do Not leave your grill unattended.

• Keep the grill in a place that is free from flammable items and away from porch rails, and low lying branches.

• Keep children and pets as far away from the grill as possible

• Check the gas tank hose for leaks before using it for the first time each year.

NOTE: A light soap and water solution applied to the hose is a great way to check for leaks. You can often smell a propane leak, but propane will also release bubbles when the soap and water solution is applied. If you detect a leak, turn the gas tank and grill off. If the leak stops, get the grill serviced by a professional before using it again. If the leak does not stop, call the fire department.

• Always make sure your gas grill lid is open before igniting.

• If you smell gas while cooking, immediately move away from the grill and call the fire department. Do not move the grill.

• If the flames go out for any reason, turn the grill and gas off and wait at least 15 minutes before re-lighting it.

• Keep your grill clean by regularly removing grease or fat buildup from the grates and trays below.

Mold Intrusion Leads to Unhealthy Living Environment

5/15/2017 (Permalink)

Intrusion of water into your home or place of business can result in mold growth. Water intrusions can result from storm damage, plumbing or equipment failures, long-standing leaks and poor humidity control. When water intrusions are not addressed right away, the resulting damage can present increased risk of harmful mold growth. Some amount of mold spores are normally present in most environments. If the humidity and moisture levels in a water-damaged environment are not promptly returned to normal, mold spores may grow and multiply. Organic materials found inside a building, such as wood, paper, drywall and insulation, provide food sources for mold to flourish. Excessive mold growth can lead to indoor environmental conditions that pose a health threat.

Take Precautions

The professionals at SERVPRO of Prosper / Little Elm handle water damages every day and know prompt action is required to prevent mold growth. Mold is more likely to spread when an environment has been subject to moisture for a long period of time. If your property has sustained a recent water damage, it is vital to remove excess water and dry the structure promptly. If there is an ongoing moisture problem in the building, it is important to be alert for:

  • The presence of visible mold.
  • Strong musty odors which may indicate mold is present.
  • Any evidence of past moisture problems that might have caused undetected mold growth.
  • excessive humidity.

These conditions may require the expertise of a qualified Indoor Air Quality/ Environmental Professional to inspect the building for mold growth and water damage problems. In the event that mold was found, you will be asked to approve and sign a work authorization form prior to any mold cleanup to related work being performed. The technician may also recommend you to leave the affected area while the mold cleanup and associated containment process is being safely completed.

If extensive mold growth is present, additional assistance may be required. Some situations require the addition of an Indoor Air Quality/Environmental Professional with the specialized equipment and services needed to assess and/or repair property. You may wish to consult your adjuster if needed.

Happy National Teachers Appreciation Week

5/4/2017 (Permalink)

National Teacher Appreciation Day, otherwise called National Teacher Day, is seen on the Tuesday of the principal entire week in May. In 2017, National Teacher Day will happen on May 9th. This day is a part of Teacher Appreciation Week, which is the first week of May every year.

The National Education Association depicts National Teacher Day  as a day for with respect to instructors and seeing the continuing duties they make to our lives. Educators assume a basic part in teaching and molding our kids: the future pioneers of our nation. They are benevolent, persistent, persevering, devoted and understanding experts that shape our kids' lives in a positive direction. We endow our kids with the educators, and they influence their lives once a day.

Thank a Teacher

The time has come to say, "Thank You" to the uncommon educators that you know. Tell them that they are acknowledged for all that they do. Utilize #TeacherAppreciationDay to post via web-based networking media(Facebook, Instagram, Twitter).

History of Teacher Appreciation Day

Political and instructive pioneers initially started dialogs for a day to respect educators in 1944. In 1953, Eleanor Roosevelt convinced the 81st Congress to announce National Teachers' Day. Congress announced March 7, 1980, as National Teacher Day. The National Education Association(NEA) kept on watching Teacher Day on the main Tuesday in March until 1985, when the National PTA set up Teacher Appreciation Week as the principal entire week of May. The NEA Representative Assembly then voted to make the Tuesday of that week National Teacher Day.

Go Green when you Clean

4/28/2017 (Permalink)

Cleaning Go Green when you Clean Phthalates, paraben, lead and BPA/BPS are just some of the toxic chemicals found in the 10 most common household cleaners.

Everywhere we look in our homes and offices, on our floors, windows, countertops, dishes, clothes, furniture and even floating through the air we breathe, cleaning products are all around us.

As we battle against germs and all the dirt and grime that accumulates around us, using the wrong cleaning products may be making the fight against dirt and germs even harder on us. The vast majority of the traditional cleaning items we as a whole grew up with are oil based and have questionable environmental and health ramifications. Rather than deciding on cleaning items that destroy everything in their way, there are a lot of techniques as well as natural products that keep a house tidy and smelling fresh, while not employing chemicals that have toxic side effects.

Utilize green cleaning products

As Conventional cleaning products and their impacts on our environment and health become more understood, the market has seen an increasing niche of green cleaning products and brands that are coming out and competing for the small space underneath everyones kitchen sinks. The majority of these new green cleaning products are non-toxic, biodegradable and effective alternatives to the traditional petroleum-based cleaning products. If your on a budget but still want to clean green, then home-mixed cleaners are another smart and environmentally conscious choice. Safe, alternative products like baking soda and vinegar can be utilized to clean nearly anything. Blend in a little warm water with both of these and you have yourself a strong, safe, and effective cleaner that is useful all over your home.

Keeping Indoor Air Quality Fresh

Believe it or not, the air inside our homes is normally more toxic than the air outside of them. Due to all the toxic substances and materials that are present throughout our homes, and the fact that homes are now more insulated than ever before, which is great from an energy standpoint, but always try and keep windows open as much as possible to allow the fresh air in and the toxic fumes out.

Antibacterial Cleaners vs. Regular Soap and Water

It’s a fact that antimicrobial and antibacterial soaps do not clean better than traditional soap and water. The FDA found that using soap and water actually cleans your hands better than antibacterial soaps and don’t run the risk of creating super germs in the process and tells us to avoid them all together. Next time you see soaps and cleaners that are antibacterial or antimicrobial, pass on them and stick to soap and warm water.

So fresh and so Green!

Next time you want to make your home smell fresh and aromatic, don’t reach for a new air-freshener and instead reach for natural herbs and spices. Try boiling cloves, cinnamon or any concoction of your favorite herbs and spices as an all natural way to make your house smell like your home. If your home or office is in need of professional cleaning or odor removal, call the professionals at SERVPRO Prosper / Little Elm at 972-668-3117 and we will take care of the cleaning for you!

Moisture Control: Taking Simple Steps before Mold becomes an Issue

4/24/2017 (Permalink)

Mold Remediation Moisture Control: Taking Simple Steps before Mold becomes an Issue Built up moisture on window shows there is an issue with moisture control inside home.

Yes, mold is essential to the well being of our environment and without it, we would not have life saving antibiotics like penicillin that would exist and scrumptious soft cheeses like brie would not be here for us to spread on pieces of toasted french bread that compliment our favorite glass of wine. Mold is necessary for the break down and decomposition for all of natures organic matter, which helps recycle nutrients as well as gets rid of the build up of decaying matter and allows new vegetation to grow. Mold does a lot of good for our planet but unfortunately, it can also cause a lot of harm, especially if it begins to grow and spread undetected in your home.

Mold spores spread effectively and can't be totally destroyed.

Mold can develop in almost any place and on all kinds of varying material, such as food, clothing, carpets, paper and even areas that we can’t see for example, the rear side of drywall, zones inside walls where the spilling or gathering of water from leaky or busted pipes, and underneath ceiling tiles inside structures.

So what would you be able to do in case you're worried about mold developing in your home?

The simplest approach to avoiding mold inside your home is taking small steps before it becomes an issue. The way to form counteractive action against the build up of mold is basic: moisture and dampness control.

The best ways to control the amount of moisture in your home are first recognizing the problem areas throughout your home. Checking your storm cellar for flooding after a heavy amount of rainfall comes through, making sure no condensation builds up on an upstairs window.

If you do find damp areas inside your home you will want to dry them immediately.

Mold cannot form without moisture and even if its just a spill on carpet, it should be dried within a window of 24 to 48 hours otherwise mold can start developing and a lot of times it begins in areas that are not visible to the naked eye. Proper ventilation is also key in keeping mold out of your home, your daily routine might be inviting mold into your home. Always make sure you dry wet clothes immediately and open a window while cooking dinner. Following simple steps when doing your daily activities could stop the formation of mold. If you have a serious issue with mold inside your home that you cannot fix, call the professionals at SERVPRO of Prosper / Little Elm, and we will be on the job within a couple hours making sure mold leaves your home and stays gone. We are available 24/7 and can’t wait to tackle any cleanup and restoration work for you and your family.
