Water Damage? Leave it to the Professionals

Water Damage Water Damage? Leave it to the Professionals Suffering with water damage? Leave it to the professionals at SERVPRO of Prosper/Little Elm.

Most people don't actively plan on water damage in their homes or businesses, so deciding the proper way to restore a flood damaged property is important.

With so many aspects of life becoming increasingly more expensive by the day, it is no wonder that so many Americans choose to go the Do-It-Yourself route on an ever expanding wide array of tasks. While changing one's own oil or even doing one's own drywall job is commendable, there are still some jobs that are best left to the professionals. Water damage restoration and mitigation is one of them.

Each year, billions of dollars in property damage occur all over the United States due to flood damage. While some of these properties will inevitably be written off, the vast majority are completely salvageable. This means that, even though massive property damage was ultimately incurred, there absolutely never should have been any to begin with. All too often, this is the simple result of the property owner not recognizing the severity of the situation and taking the proper steps to remedy it.

One of those important steps is to mitigate damage after a flood.

Saving Carpet from Mold

11/7/2017 (Permalink)

It doesn’t take much for a rug to get wet.In rare instances the culprit can be extreme weather or run-off after a storm, more often the cause is a broken pipe or appliance is enough to thoroughly soak a carpet through. Once this does happen there is a genuine concern that you might be facing mold growth in the near future. Mold is a fungus that thrives off of moisture and an organic food source for sustenance. Carpet fibers are an excellent food source for mold, once fungus gets into your carpet, it is difficult to get it out again.

The best way to save your beautiful carpet from mold damage after it gets wet is to call the professionals here at SERVPRO of Prosper/Little Elm.The key to saving floor coverings from microbial growth is to dry them out quickly and thoroughly, not allowing the spores a chance to grow. Our technicians are IICRC certified and have the equipment and skills to dry your carpet fast.

On arrival, we begin by extracting as much water from your carpet as possible. We use specialized tools and make several passes over the affected area because we understand that thorough extraction is key to the success of the drying process.

Once extraction is complete, our next step is to dry your carpet. SERVPRO ofProsper/Little Elmwill use up to three different kinds of air movers strategically placed to move air over the area and wick out what moisture is left. We also use dehumidifiers to lower the moisture levels in the air and hasten the drying process.

We understand that thorough drying is the only protection against mold growth. To make sure we dry your carpet and structure up to its dry standard we use a range of equipment including moisture meters and moisture probes to measure the moisture content continuously through the drying process.

If your carpet gets wet, do not put your home or carpet at risk for microbial growth! Call SERVPRO of Prosper/Little Elm, we are always here to help! Our phones are answered 24 hours a day/7 days a week.

SERVPRO is Storm Ready

9/25/2017 (Permalink)

Severe weather can happen any time, anywhere.

Each year, Americans cope with an average of the following intense storms:

  • 10,000 severe thunderstorms

  • 5,000 floods or flash floods

  • 1,000 tornadoes

  • 2 landfalling deadly hurricanes

Approximately 98% of all nationally declared disasters are weather-related, leading to around 500 deaths per year and nearly $15 billion in damage. * Knowing your risk of severe weather, taking action and being an example are just a few steps you can take to be better prepared to save your life and assist in saving the lives of others.

    Know Your Risk.

The first step to becoming weather-ready is to understand the type
of hazardous weather that can affect where you live and work, and how the weather could impact you, your business and your family. Check the weather forecast regularly, obtain a NOAA Weather Radio, and learn about Wireless Emergency Alerts. Severe weather comes in many forms and your shelter plan should include all types of local hazards.

    Take Action.

Take the next step in severe weather preparedness by creating a communications plan for your home and business. Put together
or purchase an emergency kit. Keep important papers and valuables in a safe place.

    Be an Example.

Once you have taken action to prepare for severe weather, share your story with co-workers and family and friends on Facebook or Twitter. Your preparedness story will inspire others to do the same.

    Build An Emergency Supply Kit

  • Water (one gallon per person per day)

  • Food (non-perishable 3-day supply)

  • Manual can opener

Grill Safely Tips from SERVPRO of Prosper/Little Elm

6/20/2017 (Permalink)

June and July are peak months for summer grilling fires. So when you pull out your backyard grill to wipe the built up dust off of it to once again brush up on your grilling skills in hopes that you will finally perfect that perfect secret recipe.  As exciting as it is to break out the grill for the official start of the summer season right, we have to always consider the safety that needs to be taken into account when preparing cook outdoors.

According to the National Fire Protection Agency(NFPA), fire departments in the United States responded to an average of 8,900 home fires that involved the use of grills, hibachis, or barbecues per year. These 8,900 fires caused an annual average of $120 million dollars in property damage, 160 injuries and 10 civilian deaths.  Almost all the losses resulted from structure fires. The leading cause of grill fires came from the inability to properly clean a grill before using it, as well as not keeping it a safe distance from outside structures or the home itself and leaving the grill unattended. 83%, which breaks down to about every 5 out of 6 grills involved in home fires were fueled by gas, while 13% used other sources of fuel.

Precautions to take while grilling

• Stay alert when grilling. Avoid grilling when you are tired or have consumed too much alcohol.

• Do Not leave your grill unattended.

• Keep the grill in a place that is free from flammable items and away from porch rails, and low lying branches.

• Keep children and pets as far away from the grill as possible

• Check the gas tank hose for leaks before using it for the first time each year.

NOTE: A light soap and water solution applied to the hose is a great way to check for leaks. You can often smell a propane leak, but propane will also release bubbles when the soap and water solution is applied. If you detect a leak, turn the gas tank and grill off. If the leak stops, get the grill serviced by a professional before using it again. If the leak does not stop, call the fire department.

• Always make sure your gas grill lid is open before igniting.

• If you smell gas while cooking, immediately move away from the grill and call the fire department. Do not move the grill.

• If the flames go out for any reason, turn the grill and gas off and wait at least 15 minutes before re-lighting it.

• Keep your grill clean by regularly removing grease or fat buildup from the grates and trays below.
