SERVPRO of Prosper/Little Elm is excited to announce that we are offering mold remediation in McKinney, TX!

All it takes is the tiniest of water leaks or extra humidity (maybe due to all of the rain we’ve had recently!) for mold to take its place in your McKinney home or business. Unfortunately, mold can take over your property and spread within 48 hours. The mold can cause health risks due to allergens and other irritants.

SERVPRO of Prosper/Little Elm can come out and inspect your home or commercial property to diagnose the severity of the mold problem you may be facing. We use specialized equipment and trained professionals in order to properly inspect and make a judgment on your property’s mold problems!

Understanding mold and how it forms is essential when it comes to knowing whether or not your property is at risk.

It isn’t common knowledge, but mold is almost everywhere both inside and outside! Mold spores float around in the air and come into your home through openings such as doors or windows. They can even slip in through your AC or heating systems.

Mold spores being in the air isn’t a problem unless you have higher than normal humidity or moisture in your home or business. Once mold spores are exposed to moisture, they form and grow into colonies of mold. Before we even begin mold remediation, we need to identify the sources of water or moisture. If we remediate mold without identifying the point of moisture production, then the mold will just form again!

You may notice mold in your home by the musty smell it can produce. There are also other signs of mold you can use to determine if you may currently have mold inside your house or business.

If you think your business or home has mold, then SERVPRO of Prosper/Little Elm can offer our mold remediation in McKinney, TX! Give us a call at (972) 668-3117 or request help online through our website!

Mold Prevention Tips from SERVPRO of Prosper/Little Elm

10/23/2018 (Permalink)

Mold inside the home can be disastrous to not only your health, but also your family’s and any pets you may have. Today we wanted to go over some mold prevention tips to help you avoid health risks and costly damages to your home.

  1. Indoor Climate Control – Mold rears its ugly head a lot whenever we hit those hot and humid summer seasons, especially here in Texas! Anytime you set the thermostat too high, your air conditioner won’t dehumidify the air in your home. If you end up setting the temperatures too low, then your home may have some condensation inside, causing mold! The ideal temperature for your thermostat in your home is 78 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Track Indoor Humidity – Tracking your home’s humidity levels is a great way to have an idea of the current risk of mold in your residence. You want your internal humidity to be between 35-55% here in Texas. If you hit or exceed 70% humidity levels, then mold may begin to develop.
  3. Use a Dehumidifier! – It may seem like a niche purchase, but dehumidifiers work very well when it comes to getting rid of some of that extra moisture floating around in your home. There are even dehumidifiers that are built to dehumidify your entire house. If you only have occasional humidity problems, then a simple portable dehumidifier will perform well enough.

These are some simple tips that can help greatly reduce your home’s risk to mold issues and damage. If you are already experiencing mold damage in your home, then you may need to get a professional mold remediation service. SERVPRO of Prosper/Little Elm is here to help!

Mold Intrusion Leads to Unhealthy Living Environment

5/15/2017 (Permalink)

Intrusion of water into your home or place of business can result in mold growth. Water intrusions can result from storm damage, plumbing or equipment failures, long-standing leaks and poor humidity control. When water intrusions are not addressed right away, the resulting damage can present increased risk of harmful mold growth. Some amount of mold spores are normally present in most environments. If the humidity and moisture levels in a water-damaged environment are not promptly returned to normal, mold spores may grow and multiply. Organic materials found inside a building, such as wood, paper, drywall and insulation, provide food sources for mold to flourish. Excessive mold growth can lead to indoor environmental conditions that pose a health threat.

Take Precautions

The professionals at SERVPRO of Prosper / Little Elm handle water damages every day and know prompt action is required to prevent mold growth. Mold is more likely to spread when an environment has been subject to moisture for a long period of time. If there is an ongoing moisture problem in the building, it is important to be alert for:

  • The presence of visible mold.
  • Strong musty odors which may indicate mold is present.
  • Any evidence of past moisture problems that might have caused undetected mold growth.
  • excessive humidity.

These conditions may require the expertise of a qualified Indoor Air Quality/ Environmental Professional to inspect the building for mold growth and water damage problems. In the event that mold was found, you will be asked to approve and sign a work authorization form prior to any mold cleanup to related work being performed. The technician may also recommend you to leave the affected area while the mold cleanup and associated containment process is being safely completed.

Moisture Control: Taking Simple Steps before Mold becomes an Issue

4/24/2017 (Permalink)

Built up moisture on window shows there is an issue with moisture control inside home.

Yes, mold is essential to the well being of our environment and without it, we would not have life saving antibiotics like penicillin that would exist and scrumptious soft cheeses like brie would not be here for us to spread on pieces of toasted french bread that compliment our favorite glass of wine. Mold is necessary for the break down and decomposition for all of natures organic matter, which helps recycle nutrients as well as gets rid of the build up of decaying matter and allows new vegetation to grow. Mold does a lot of good for our planet but unfortunately, it can also cause a lot of harm, especially if it begins to grow and spread undetected in your home.

Mold spores spread effectively and can't be totally destroyed.

Mold can develop in almost any place and on all kinds of varying material, such as food, clothing, carpets, paper and even areas that we can’t see for example, the rear side of drywall, zones inside walls where the spilling or gathering of water from leaky or busted pipes, and underneath ceiling tiles inside structures.

So what would you be able to do in case you're worried about mold developing in your home?

The simplest approach to avoiding mold inside your home is taking small steps before it becomes an issue. The way to form counteractive action against the build up of mold is basic: moisture and dampness control.

The best ways to control the amount of moisture in your home are first recognizing the problem areas throughout your home. Checking your storm cellar for flooding after a heavy amount of rainfall comes through, making sure no condensation builds up on an upstairs window.

If you do find damp areas inside your home you will want to dry them immediately.

Mold cannot form without moisture and even if its just a spill on carpet, it should be dried within a window of 24 to 48 hours otherwise mold can start developing and a lot of times it begins in areas that are not visible to the naked eye. Proper ventilation is also key in keeping mold out of your home, your daily routine might be inviting mold into your home. Always make sure you dry wet clothes immediately and open a window while cooking dinner. Following simple steps when doing your daily activities could stop the formation of mold. If you have a serious issue with mold inside your home that you cannot fix, call the professionals at SERVPRO of Prosper / Little Elm, and we will be on the job within a couple hours making sure mold leaves your home and stays gone. We are available 24/7 and can’t wait to tackle any cleanup and restoration work for you and your family.

What to do when mold develops on your supply vents

3/14/2017 (Permalink)

Supply vent with mold build up

Here at SERVPRO of Prosper / Little Elm, we receive several calls a month concerning mold on the HVAC supply registers (vents). Customers call out of concern about their homes supply vents developing mold in and around them and whether or not we should come out and professionally remove it. Mold developing on supply vents is commonplace here in Texas.

As Texans, we love our cold air conditioning especially during the hot and humid summer time. The problem arises when we set our thermostat at 69 degrees and the conditioned air coming out of the vents being around 66 degrees with a relative humidity of around 64%, which is the maximum amount of water vapor the air can hold at this temperature.

Dew point is when the temperature and humidity are equal to one another. We have all seen examples of this, especially during the early mornings of spring and fall, when your lawn and vehicles will be covered in drops of water (dew). This is exactly why it is common to find water saturation forming around your HVAC supply registers during the summer time in Texas.

So what can we do?

Two options, we could either turn our thermostats up to 72 degrees or higher,  which isn’t the most popular suggestion for some transplant Texans, or we can simply remove the interior supply vents and wash away the developing surface mold on them. Keep in mind this option is only viable to relatively small amounts of developing mold.

If an abundance of mold is collecting on or around your supply vents, then that is when you would need to call us. Here at SERVPRO of Prosper / Little Elm, we would dispatch a team of professionally trained technicians to come out and assess any major issues regarding the build up of mold and work promptly towards its removal.
